International Congress against the Death Penalty

On 19 and 20 May, the International Congress against the Death Penalty: Opinio Iuris and International Law was held at the Residencia de Estudiantes of the CSIC in Madrid. The main objective was to draw up a manifesto to consolidate the opinio iuris on the jus cogens status of the safeguards against the death penalty, as well as the qualification of the death penalty as a cruel punishment and, therefore, contrary to article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which also implies a reflection on cruelty.

The Cesar Beccaria medal was awarded to Federico Mayor Zaragoza, President of the Culture of Peace Foundation and former Director-General of UNESCO 2004-2011.

Also, on the second day of the congress, the book Geography of cruelty. Places of execution I, by Prof. Rosario de Vicente Martínez. Rosario by Vicente Martinez.

On May 19 and 20, the International Congress against the Death Penalty was held at the CSIC Student Residence in Madrid: Opinion of the law and International Law. The main objective was to elaborate a manifesto that would allow consolidating the opinion of law about the status of right compelling of the safeguards against the death penalty, as well as the classification of the death penalty as cruel punishment and, therefore, contrary to article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which also implies a reflection on cruelty.

In addition, within the framework of the congress, the medal was awarded Cesar Beccaria to Federico Mayor Zaragoza, President of the Culture of Peace Foundation and former Director General of UNESCO, whose Laudatio was delivered by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, President of the Government from 2004-2011.

Likewise, on the second day of the congress, the book Geography of cruelty. Places of execution I, by prof. Rosario by Vicente Martinez.
